Seahawks announce firings of Darrell Bevell, Tom Cable from coaching staff

New England Patriots v Seattle Seahawks

RENTON -- The Seattle Seahawks announced Wednesday afternoon the team has relieved offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell and assistant head coach/offensive line coach Tom Cable from their duties.

"We are challenged by change," head coach Pete Carroll said in a statement. "But excited to attack the future with great purpose. I want to thank both Tom and Darrell for their role in helping take this program to a championship level. I will always be grateful for the opportunity to coach and compete alongside these great men."

Bevell and Cable each served seven seasons in their roles with the team, joining the franchise in 2011. Bevell replaced Jeremy Bates, who fired after one season as the team's offensive coordinator. Cable essentially replaced Alex Gibbs as the team's offensive line coach. Gibbs quit on the Seahawks at the end of training camp in 2010 and was replaced on an interim basis by Pat Ruel, who remained on staff as an assistant offensive line coach.

"I would like to thank the entire Seahawks organization for seven great seasons," Bevell said in a statement from the team. "I can't thank Mr. (Paul) Allen, Pete Carroll, John Schneider, our coaching staff and players enough for the support and hard work they put in to help build the championship success of the team."

The moves with Bevell and Cable may not be the only ones either. KJR's Dave "Softy" Mahler reported Wednesday morning he heard defensive coordinator Kris Richard will be out and quarterbacks coach Carl Smith would be leaving as well.

It's a monumental change for a coaching staff that hasn't changed much through the team's run of success. Gus Bradley and Dan Quinn left to take promotions as head coaches in Jacksonville and Atlanta, and Rocky Seto, Lofa Tatupu and Kippy Brown retired from coaching. However, the moves with Bevell, Cable and potentially Richard are the few significant chances to the staff since Bates was fired in 2011.
