Seahawks sign CB Dontae Johnson, release preseason schedule

San Francisco 49ers v Chicago Bears

The Seattle Seahawks added former San Francisco 49ers cornerback Dontae Johnson to their roster on Wednesday as they continue to tweak their roster prior to the NFL Draft.

Johnson was a fourth-round pick of the 49ers in 2014 out of North Carolina State and spent his first four seasons with San Francisco. He became a full-time starter for the first time last season, starting all 16 games. He recorded 77 tackles and had one interception with seven passes defended.

Johnson adds a veteran option to the group following the departures of Richard Sherman and DeShawn Shead this offseason. Byron Maxwell and Jeremy Lane remain unsigned as free agents. Though Seattle appears to have moved on from any continued relationship with Lane, Maxwell had been in discussions with the team about returning for next season. It's unclear how the signing of Johnson could impact that decision.

Shaquill Griffin will return as a starter and Justin Coleman signed his restricted free agent tender to remain as the likely starter in nickel defenses. Sherman's departure has created uncertainty at the second starting cornerback spot and Johnson can help provide a veteran option to compete for the job.

Neiko Thorpe, DeAndre Elliott and Mike Tyson also remain on the roster as possible options for playing time.

Preseason Schedule Announced:

The exact dates and times of the games are yet to be solidified but the four opponents Seattle will face in the 2018 preseason are now in place.

Seattle will open and close the preseason at home with games against the Indianapolis Colts and Oakland Raiders. The team will travel to face the Los Angeles Chargers and Minnesota Vikings in between for their four-game exhibition slate.

The game against the Raiders will almost certainly be August 30 as the NFL wraps up the preseason on the Thursday night before Labor Day. The other three games will fall somewhere between Thursday-Saturday of the previous three weekends as the Seahawks don't have a nationally televised preseason game.
